New York State Education Department Approval

December 12, 2009

Message from the President

Persuant to our application for approval submitted in 2006, a distinguished site visit team from the New York State Education Department, Office Of The Professions visited our campus in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia. They inspected our facilities, curriculum and administrative procedures to determine that the MD program offered at International American University, substantially meets the requirements of the Regulations of the Commissioner of the New York State Education Department, and will recommend that the College of Medicine be approved to conduct student clinical clerkships in hospitals located in New York.

Upon formal approval by the Board of Regents, our students can engage in clinical clerkships exceeding 12 weeks at affiliate teaching hospitals in New York. Further, graduates of approved schools are eligible to participate in Post Graduate Residency Programs in New York State, which approximately holds 1/5th of the total residency spots in the United States. Currently there are only 14 medical schools outside the US that are approved by the NYSED and we are proud to be the next addition to the list.

I take this oppurtunity to recognize the hard work put in by our staff and students. I congratulate the entire community for the superior level of dedication, which made this acheivement possible and look forward to many more in the future. Let us continue to work together for the greater success of IAU.
