Admission Requirements

International American University (IAU) College of Medicine encourages applications from bright individuals who are focused on attaining a first rate medical education and are dedicated, enthusiastic and well-suited to the rigorous study of medicine.

Pre-Requisites

The College of Medicine requires at least 90 credit hours of undergraduate coursework for admission to the MD program, but recommends the completion of a 4 year undergraduate degree before entering Medical School. The coursework should include the following prerequisite courses.

One Year (10 hours)

Inorganic or General Chemistry (with labs)

One Year (10 hours)

Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry (with labs)

One Year (10 hours)

General Biology or Zoology (with labs)

One Sem (5 hours)

Physics (with labs)

One Year (10 hours)

English

One Sem. (5 hours)

Mathematics (preferably Calculus or Statistics)

In addition, students are highly encouraged to take courses that provide a broad background in humanities, as part of the pre-medical preparation. Please see the recommended IAU PreMed Curriculum offered at Texas A&M Commerce.

In order to be considered for Admission to the 4 year MD program, the following documents must be submitted to The Office of Admissions located at 5999 Summerside Dr Ste 220, Dallas, TX 75252. View Map

  • IAU Application for Admission   (online or paper version)
  • Application fee of $100 (non refundable)
  • Two passport photographs
  • Personal Statement explaining why you want to become a physician
  • At least two letters of recommendation from academic or professional sources
  • Resume listing extracurricular or medical voluntary activities
  • Official Transcripts for all coursework completed thus far
  • Evaluated Transcripts for coursework completed outside the United States

Transfer Students

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates closely monitors regulation with regards to student transfers. We highly suggest downloading their recent bulletin for the most up-to-date information. If you are applying as a transfer student from another WHO, IMED listed school, in addition to the above, the following documents are required.

  • Official Academic Transcript from the previous medical school
  • Official ECFMG transcript of USMLE scores (for those students who have taken the exams)
  • Letter of Enrollment from the Dean or Registrar of the previous medical school
  • Two recommendation letters from professors of the previous medical school
  • Completed Transfer Supplement Form  

Transfer credit is not automatic and applicants should not assume that courses taken at other institutions will meet our requirements. Acceptance of credits earned at other schools is subject to verification and level of placement in the program will be determined by the Admissions Committee in consultation with the Promotions Committee. Course assignments are the responsibility of the Promotions Committee and subject to the established schedule of courses at the time of transfer. Applicants must further meet our premed requirements to be eligible for transfer credits.

Pre-Med Students

Applicants to the Two Year Premed Program offered in affiliation with Texas A&M University at Commerce must submit additional documents as listed in Pre-Medical Program. Please note that Pre-Med applicants must complete seperate applications to both Texas A&M Commerce and IAU College of Medicine and send required documents to each institution.

International Students

Applicants who have completed their undergraduate studies in countries other than the United States will be evaluated on their merits. The applicant will be expected to have completed a pre-medical curriculum comparable to pre-requisites described above. All required documents, if originally in a foreign language, must be accompanied by a notarized English translation. All transcripts documenting post-secondary coursework completed in institutions outside the United States must be evaluated by an approved International Credential Evaluation Service. Personal Interview

Applicants who meet the criteria for admission will be scheduled for an interview. The personal interview is conducted over the phone or at our Admissions Office in Dallas. The interviewing committee consists of two members of the basic science faculty, two members of the clinical faculty and a member of the executive management. The objective is to evaluate the candidate in the following areas

      • Communication Skills
  • Content of Responses
  • Academic Record
  • Writing Skills and expression of ideas
  • Preparation for medical school
  • Extra curricular and Voluntary Activities
  • Overall ability to become a successful physician
