Over the past few years, IAU – College of Medicine has seen a large increase in the number applicants and enrolments from Canada. In fact, Canadian students now make up a large proportion of the student body.  At IAU, we are committed to not only providing Canadian citizens and permanent residents with the best possible medical education, but also making them feel at home on the island and helping them obtain clinical rotations and residencies at home.

IAU Canadian Students Association (CSA)

The recently formed Canadian Students Association (CSA) strives to promote, celebrate and appreciate Canadian Culture here at IAU College of Medicine. CSA is here to develop a comforting atmosphere in which students forever feel at 'home' while on the island.  The CSA also helps ease the transition for incoming Canadian students when joining IAU.

Scholarships
IAU offers Canadian students a number of scholarship programs to recognize outstanding performance of applicants in various fields. Scholarships are granted as credits to basic sciences tuition and fees for semesters one to four.

Canadian Banks Offering Student Lines Of Credit
Canadian Citizens are eligable for private loans from serveral major canadian financal institutions:

Bank of Montreal (BMO)
Bank of Montreal offers students a credit line to fund the educational needs. Bank of Montreal encourages students planning on attending IAU to contact the bank by phone and discuss their needs with the education lending team. The terms and structure of the program do allow for a modest amount of customization. Students with an existing relationship with BMO may score higher on the overall credit evaluation.

Royal Bank of Canadal (RBC)
RBC Canada offers students a credit line to fund the educational needs. They recommend IAU students contact the bank by phone and complete the application process.The terms and structure of the program do not allow for customization, however, students with an existing relationship with BOM may experience more flexibility on the part of the bank.

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)
CIBC provides educational loans to all students starting or completing a degree in Medicine. Under the CIBC Professional Edge Student Program, you can borrow up to $150,000 (depending on your field of study) to use for your education, living and residency costs

Toronto-Dominion Canada Trust (TD)
TD Canada Trust offers financial assistance via their “Student Line of Credit” These programs are customized to satisfy the individual needs of each student. TD Canada Trust does not maintain a centralized education funding team. They recommend students visit branch locations and discuss funding alternatives with the branch manager. Depending on previous relationship and credit worthiness, TD Canada Trust may modify normal program terms to better accommodate student needs.

Residency and Licensing in Canada

The the Medical Council of Canada provides helpful information and an outline of procedures for obtaining residency and licensure in Canada.

The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) and IMG-specific programs are the main points of access into postgraduate training.

Graduates from IAU are eligible to apply for the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). To be eligible to participate in the CaRMS you must be either a medical student or graduate having obtained or obtaining a medical degree by July 1 of the match year from a school accredited by the LCME/CACMS or an International Medical School approved by the IMED/Faimer.
