Externship programs are non-degree seeking programs - specifically designed to benefit International Medical Graduates seeking US clinical experience as a pre-requisite for residency appointments. Many residency programs desire FMGs to ideally possess some US clinical experience in order to be considered for post graduate training. Applicants to the externship program must be a ECFMG certified foreign medical graduate and have successfully completed the USMLE Step 1.
This program is beneficial for FMGs applying to residency programs in the United States as it provides adequate clinical experience and helps to gain an overview of the US health care system. Externs complete the same clinical clerkships as regular students and will rotate side by side with other US and Caribbean medical students.
The Six week program offers ONE clinical rotation of your choice. Most popular choices are Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The cost of the 6 week program is $5500 USD and this includes malpractice insurance. Living expenses are extra and depends on the city where rotations are scheduled.
The twelve weeks program offers TWO clinical rotations of your choice. Most popular choices are Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The cost of the 12 week program is $8500 and this includes malpractice insurance. Living expenses are extra and depends on the city where rotations are scheduled.
This program is offered to practicing physicians outside the US, who wish to gain additional clinical training in specialized areas that may be unavailable in their home countries. Please contact the Office of the Externship Program at 972-919-5158 for more information.
